Side panel mounting holes are punched on an 0.87-inch grid to allow total flexibility in the mounting of components. The rear panel is fully adjustable from front to rear. Not everything that goes into a 19-inch rack has provisions for standard 19-inch mounting. Small components need a home, too. A 19-inch rack mount enclosure is designed to mount inside an industry-standard rack by means of mounting brackets on the face of the enclosure. In the 1800s, the railroads created relay racks for signal relays, but the dimensions were not standardized. In 1922, AT&T settled on a standard of 19-inch-wide racks. Eventually, this became a standard for all industries. Technically, the width of the enclosure, including the mounting brackets, is 19 inches, but the minimum space between the rails is 17.75 inches, so the inside width of the enclosure is smaller. The outside width of the rack may be larger than 19 inches, as it includes the width of the rack rails. Later, the telecommunications industry introduced 23-inch racks, but most rack mount enclosures are 19-inches wide, as this is by far the most common size rack.
All enclosure manufacturers use rails, either fixed or flexible, that include mounting holes that meet EIA standards. All 19″ rack mounting equipment is designed to mount onto the rails using this hole pattern. Any piece of 19″ rack mount equipment will fit in a Bud 19″ cabinet or rack.
